The Fishing and Fish Services Company (PPiUR) "Szkuner" launched its activities on January 1st, 1955. It was established by the decree of the Minister of Navigation issued on December 24th, 1954.
"Szkuner" deals not only with fishing and fish processing, it also manages the Władysławowo seaport. It provides shipyard services repairing fishing vessels and smaller ships and provides fishing nets, ice blocks and wrappings to boat owners.
The company was created by the regional division of the Fishing and Fish Services Company "Arka" from Gdynia, becoming an independent entity. Arka had undergone its regional division in Władysławowo since 1951. The new entity took over fishing vessels, fishing areas and the construction of a fishing harbor as well as seafaring and land-dedicated employees of "Arka".
PPiUR "Szkuner" is currently the only Polish state-owned company fishing in the Baltic Sea. At first, in the early 50s, "Szkuner" operated small fishing vessels (15-17 m long). Later on, larger boats were gradually being acquired, while selling smaller vessels to private fishermen. In the years 1956-1968 "Szkuner" also fished in the North Sea. Steadily, the base of fishing vessels grew larger and larger, starting from 31 to exceed 50 (in 1982 a record was set with a 57-vesses base). Currently the company owns 8 fishing vessels of the type B 280, B 403 and B 410 - these rank as some of the biggest and most modern among the Polish fishing fleet in the Baltic Sea.
The possession of a large and modern fishing fleet spawned the development of the processing and auxiliary facilities in the harbor. In the 60s, modernizing the existing infrastructure aside, "Szkuner" constructed the scale ice manufacture, fishmeal manufacture and fish-liver oil manufacture in the port. A railway for fishing vessels and smaller boats was built and the existing repair shops were expanded, to eventually become the Fishing Vessel Repair Shipyard of PPUiR "Szkuner".
In 1969 along the discharging wharf, industrial facilities were commissioned, housing a fish-processing hall, cold rooms, freezers, a cold store as well as social-utility and office premises. The old hall of the processing plant was adapted to accommodate a net storehouse. Chest-washing facilities and a wrapping ground were also housed there.
In the 80s investments were carried out aimed at fully profiting from the fishing and production potential accumulated in the port. Such facilities were commissioned as the new processing lines for filleting cods and herrings as well as for new freezer chests.
In 1986, after having analyzed various solutions proposed, modernization and expansion of the port commenced. The project, concluded in 1996, included practically the entire port premises: construction of a new north-side breakwater, reconstruction of the discharging wharf, modernization of stopover pier and reconstruction of the east-side breakwater.
In 1994 the harbor was opened to tourists, which contributed to improving the attractiveness of Władysławowo as a tourist resort.
The company launched many environment-protecting investment projects: the fish meal manufacture was abandoned - to be replaced with the manufacture of odorless semi-fluid fodder, so called pirosiloryb; a sewage-treatment plant was constructed and connected to the regional common sewage-treatment plant "Swarzewo"; new, ecological oil-burning boiler-houses were built. Due to the abovementioned measures, "Szkuner" has become an environment-friendly company.
Particular importance is attached to achieving the best production quality possible - in 1997 works on the implementation of the HACCAP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) program began.
A big role is given to obtain the best possible quality of fish products - in 1997 started work on the implementation of the HACCP program (Quality Control System based on risk analysis and critical control point). HACCP system was fully implemented in 1998 The company is licensed for export to markets in the European Union under the heading 1001 of the veterinary number 22111801.
In 2007, implemented and certified Food Safety Management System ISO 22 000: 2005.
6 September 2007 Minister of the Treasury at the request of the company has commercialisation of the state PPiUR "SZKUNER." The company has been operating on 1 November 2007 under the name Enterprise Fishing and Fishery Services' SZKUNER "company with limited liability.
